Ingredients
- 6 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into thin slices
- 2 tbsp (28g) butter or cooking oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp (1g) fresh thyme, minced
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 tsp (6g) salt (adjust to taste)
- 1 tsp (3g) bouillon powder (or extra salt)
- 1 tsp (2–3g) ground black pepper
- 1 tsp (3g) paprika
- 1 tsp (1–2g) dried oregano
- 2 tbsp (15g) flour
- 1 cup (236ml) beef broth
- ½ cup (118ml) milk
- 1 cup (120g) shredded cheddar cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Slice the potatoes evenly into thin rounds to ensure they cook uniformly in the casserole.
- Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions, garlic, and thyme, sautéing until the onions are soft and fragrant.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces. Season with salt, pepper, bouillon powder, paprika, and oregano.
- Drain excess grease, then sprinkle the flour over the beef. Stir and cook for 1 more minute to lightly toast the flour.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth and milk while stirring, and cook until the mixture thickens into a rich, gravy-like consistency.
- Grease a 9"x13" baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. Layer half the potato slices on the bottom, followed by half the beef mixture. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and beef.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes, or until potatoes are tender.
- Remove the foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar evenly on top, and bake for another 10–15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let the casserole cool for a few minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve warm.
